Medveja is a small coastal village in Croatia, in the Lovran Municipality, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.

It lies about 3 km from Lovran, and roughly 10 km from the more famous Opatija Riviera.

Historically Medveja was a fishing village; now tourism plays a big role.

The name “Medveja” has some associations — one source says it’s named after Medea (from Greek mythology, via a legend) or derived from “med veje” (collecting/having chestnuts?) though exact etymology is less certain.

Medveja is on the Adriatic coast, in a bay with a long pebble beach. The beach is considered one of the more beautiful in the Kvarner region.

At the foot of Mount Ucka / Ucka Nature Park, so the hinterland is wooded, mountainous, with Mediterranean flora.

The Ucka Nature Park (which includes Ucka mountain and parts of the Cicarija mountain range) is about 160 km². It has many endemic species, trails, waterfalls (e.g. in Lovranska Draga) and viewpoints such as the peak Vojak (1,401 m).

One popular nature walk is from Medveja to Lovranska Draga, including a route to a waterfall (“Slap”) via forest (chestnut, oak, beech) and ancient terraces.

Medveja shares many culinary traits with coastal Kvarner + inland Ucka. Here are things to try / typical:

Seafood: locally caught fish, shrimp, etc. Because of proximity to the sea, fresh fish & seafood dishes are common.

Chestnuts: especially the Lovran chestnut (“Lovranski batat” or marun in local dialect), used in various dishes: chestnut soups, desserts, creams etc.

Local produce: olives and olive oil, figs, honey, cheeses from small mountain dairies.

A few specific treats:

Pumpkin soup with chestnut (one version called “drunken soup” in some local taverns)

Smokvenjak (fig cake) from figs and other fruits, naturally made without added sugar in some places.

Chestnut cream (“Marunela”) used with ice cream/pancakes.

Because of its natural setting, Medveja is good for both relaxing and more active outdoorsy things:

Beach life: swimming, sunbathing, diving, boating. The pebble beach is long and picturesque.

Hiking/trails: Many forested trails, mountain hikes in Ucka, to waterfalls (especially in Lovranska Draga) etc.

Cycling: Several cycling trails in Ucka, some easier, some more demanding.

Nature observation: flora & fauna, endemic species, butterflies, birds.

Day trips: to Lovran, Moscenicka Draga, Opatija (promenade, architecture, café culture).

There are restaurants, cafés, and small taverns in Medveja itself. For more extensive shopping (groceries, etc.), likely small local stores/corners. Bigger markets etc in Lovran or Opatija.

Local artisanal foods and souvenirs: chestnut-based sweets, fig products, homemade cheeses, olive oil, preserves. Taverns like Konoba Kali in Medveja are known for combining local sea and mountain (Ucka) products.

While Medveja itself is small and may not host large festivals, the surrounding region has many events. Examples:

Ucka Fair (Uckarski Sajam) — in Ucka Nature Park, early September: traditional products, food & drink.

Liburnia Jazz Festival in Opatija: early July. Big jazz acts, street concerts, etc.

Marunada (Chestnut Festival) in Opatija region—celebration of chestnuts (a big local product).

Carnival in Opatija area (and nearby towns) in winter: parades, masks, festivities.

Medveja offers a quieter, more nature-oriented stay than big tourist hubs. More relaxed, laid-back.

Family-friendly: child-friendly beaches, safe environment, pleasant pace.
